What is Respite?

Respite Services are a way of giving you and your family a little breathing space. They offer moments of calm in the busyness of everyday life, giving parents and carers time to rest, while knowing their loved one is cared for with kindness and safety.

Caring for someone you love is a beautiful act, but it can also be tiring. It’s natural to feel worn down at times. Short breaks are there to remind you that it’s okay to pause, to take care of yourself, and to find a little balance again.

A good short break should feel steady and reassuring—something you can trust to be there when you need it. It should fit gently around your family’s needs, and be ready to support you in those moments when a little extra help makes all the difference.

At Home – The person stays in the comfort of their own home, surrounded by their belongings, routines, and familiar environment.

  1. Less disruption – This can be especially helpful if changes to routine cause stress or anxiety.

  2. Personalised support – Carers come to the home, so support can be fully tailored to the individual’s usual way of living.

  3. Family reassurance – Parents and carers may feel more at ease knowing their loved one is safe in a familiar place.

  4. Limitations – Opportunities for socialising or new experiences may be fewer compared to going out.

Respite at one of our recommended locations or at home?

One of Our Recommended Locations – Offers a break from the everyday environment, which can feel refreshing and exciting.

  1. Opportunities for social interaction – Depending on the setting, there may be chances to meet others, join activities, and build confidence.

  2. New experiences – The person may try different activities or routines that aren’t available at home.

  3. Carers’ relief – Parents or family carers get a complete break, with reassurance that trained staff are taking care of their loved one elsewhere.

  4. Adjustment needed – Some people may find a new place overwhelming or unsettling at first, so it works best when introduced gradually and with choice.
